Admissions Procedure

l. Every student preparing for the ministry of the Reformed Presbyterian Church shall be, before enrolment, a communicant member of the Church under the care of a Presbytery and approved by the Committee of Superintendence of the Reformed Theological College.

2. It is the duty of Presbytery to assess his character and suitability for the work of the ministry. An annual report on the student’s progress shall be made to his Presbytery.

3. No candidate shall be admitted as a regular student at the College until he has obtained a university degree or a suitable certificate from a college of higher education. A student who has not obtained one of these qualifications shall not enter his second year without special permission.

4. Candidates whose circumstances are exceptional may be exempted from a regular course of study in Arts by Synod on the recommendation of the College Committee, provided they have obtained the standard required for a State grant.

5. Two written examinations are held each Session; one at the beginning to qualify for admission and one at the close to complete the work of the Session.

6. A Diploma in Theology (Dip. Th.) is awarded to students who have completed the full course at the College and whose work has been assessed and approved by the Board of Examiners.

7. A Certificate in Biblical Studies is awarded to students (other than students for the ministry) who complete the three-year course with the exception of languages.

8. An Exposition of Scripture or a Sermon on an assigned Text shall be delivered each year by all students in presence of the Committee of Superintendence.

9. A student is subject to the academic discipline of the College during his or her period of study.

10. In awarding Diplomas and Certificates, the general character and conduct of students are taken into account.

11. All students for the ministry are required to take a course in Elocution for one year.

12. Details of Fees may be obtained from the Convenor of the Committee of Superintendence

Classiifcation of Students

There are four categories of Students:

1. Regular students

These are students for the ministry of the Reformed Presbyterian Church who fulfil all the academic requirements specified in the previous section.

2. Special students

These are either men of mature years whose circumstances are exceptional and who have been granted exemption by Synod from the normal course of studies in Arts, or those who are in training for the work of Missions.

3. Guest students

The Courses are open to students of other denominations provided their academic standing is acceptable to the College and that they have the approval of their respective Churches. Guest students are not eligible for bursaries or for grants from the Education Fund.

4. Auditors

The Professors may at their discretion admit auditors to classes.

Education Fund

The object of this Fund is to assist in educating suitable men for the ministry of the Gospel. The Fund is administered by the Committee of Superintendence to students who are recommended by their Presbyteries.

Income for the Fund is drawn from investments and is augmented by collections taken by congregations annually, and by special collections taken at ordination and installation services.

Part of the Fund may be used at the Committee’s discretion for the purchase of books for the Library and the furtherance of theological education.

Reformed Theological Journal

This Journal, published annually by the Faculty of the College, includes contributions from Reformed scholars of international repute.

Theological Education by Extension

Evening classes in Theology, Biblical Studies and Church History are held regularly in several centres. Enrolment is open to all who are interested.
